The western suburban railway services of Thessaloniki will commence at the end of November. The journey from the New Railway Station to Sindos will be completed within 12 minutes. The suburban railway ticket will cost one euro for the regular fare, with a reduced rate available for students.

The first trial run of the western suburban railway in Thessaloniki was announced by Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Konstantinos Kyranakis, during an event held at the International Hellenic University (IHU) in Sindos. The new remotely controlled line from the New Railway Station (NRS) to Sindos is expected to commence operations earlier than initially scheduled, featuring a renovated station and modern control systems, significantly improving transportation for students and local residents.

With the start of operations, bus line 52 of the Thessaloniki Urban Transport Organization (OASTH) will be rerouted to follow a safer alternative route. Additionally, free shuttle buses will operate at the Sindos station, providing transport to the university campus, and two electric bicycle stations will be installed to promote alternative modes of transportation.

Mr. Kyranakis emphasized the “transportation revolution” taking place in Thessaloniki, highlighting the significant increase in bus fleet size and the upcoming extension of the metro to Kalamaria. He also stressed the revitalization of the railway system after years of neglect, with substantial progress made in remote control systems.

The event also featured speeches by Deputy Minister of Interior Mr. Kostas Gioulekas, Rector of IHU Mr. Stamatis Angelopoulos, Regional Governor of Thessaloniki Mr. Kostas Gioutikas, and Mayor of Delta Municipality Ms. Gerakina Bisbina, all underlining the benefits of the project for the student community and local society.

The western suburban railway will have two branches: the first to Sindos (with services starting at the end of November and a travel time of 12 minutes), and the second to Diavata and Gefyra, which is scheduled for tender by the end of 2025.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to the modernization of Thessaloniki’s public transport system by promoting an integrated network of combined transport modes.
