A program, which provides social housing provisions -low budgeted but quality housing- to vulnerable groups in the capital, was submitted (20/4), by the mayor of Athens, Costas Bakogiannis, during his meeting with the Minister of Labor, Kostis Hatzidakis.

This is a comprehensive program, immediately and feasibly deployed, which will be funded by Community funds.

The proposal was submitted by the mayor of Athens to Kostis Hatzidakis envisages the immediate development of the "Estia" program, which until now had asylum seekers and ends at the end of the year, in a social housing program, with new categories of beneficiaries.

These include vulnerable low-income groups, such as the unemployed young people with an emphasis on the 15-29 age group, young low-income families, the elderly and especially those who live alone and have a low income, but also students with low family income who can not be accepted from the existing positions of the dormitories.

From these groups, special emphasis will be given to the socially vulnerable.

In addition to the immediate beneficiaries, the program of the Municipality of Athens aims to maintain the balance of housing rents in the city that is threatened with violent overthrow due to the completion of the "Home" program for asylum seekers.

It is estimated that after the end of the year more than 1,500 apartments will be left empty, with negative consequences for the city's economy.

The proposal submitted by the mayor of Athens and was very positively accepted, according to information, the Minister of Labor, includes specific financial tools (community resources) and as an implementing body is proposed EATA (Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens), which already In 2016, the "Estia" Program runs with the provision of integrated housing services in rented apartments and which to date has managed more than 400 apartments, offering a total of 8,000 housing units.

"The revitalization of the house in the center of Athens, by attracting young couples and students through the provision of financial housing is from the beginning our priorities. We are adjusting our plan, under the weight of the great social need to support "here and now" hundreds of our vulnerable fellow citizens. We will use every "tool" and all our forces to stand by them.

The Municipality of Athens already operates a wide support network so that no one is left alone. "In the same studied and effective way, we will create the new safety net that Athens needs", said Costas Bakogiannis to APE after his meeting with the Minister of Labor.
