“Block 2” in the Ionian Sea is estimated to contain potential natural gas resources of up to 7 TCF (200 billion cubic meters). As of today, the world’s largest oil company, ExxonMobil, has joined the project alongside Energean and Helleniq Energy.

The relevant estimates were recently provided by the CEO of Energean, Mathios Rigas, at a financial conference, who also noted that this is the only concession where an exploratory drilling could potentially take place within the next two years.

This prospect has gained further momentum following today’s agreement on ExxonMobil’s participation in the project.

“Block 2” is located in the Ionian Sea, 30 km west of Corfu, with its western boundary reaching the maritime border between Greece and Italy. According to the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company, water depths range from 500 to 1,500 meters, and the area lies within the geological unit of the Apulia Platform. The confirmed presence of petroleum systems in Western Greece (West Katakolo) and the Adriatic Sea makes this area particularly promising.

In 2022, 2,244 square kilometers of three-dimensional (3D) seismic data were acquired.
