The Association of Architects has formally requested assurances that buildings designated as listed—either by the Ministry of Culture (ΥΠΠΟΑ) or the Ministry of Environment and Energy (ΥΠΕΝ)—will not be affected by the upcoming demolition process targeting dangerously dilapidated structures. This process is set to begin in 21 areas across the Municipality of Athens. In a letter addressed to Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and the Deputy Mayor for Infrastructure, Andreas Grammatikogiannis, the Association calls for the protection of architecturally and historically significant buildings throughout the initiative.

SADAS (Association of Greek Architects) refers to the Panhellenic Association of Owners of Listed Buildings and Monuments, which notes that several of the buildings included on the list published by the municipality exhibit noteworthy architectural features, even in their current condition.

The Association calls for:

– A thorough inspection of these buildings by the competent authorities before any demolition permits are issued,
– And, in cases where the structures are listed or protected, that all necessary documentation and recording procedures be completed prior to their mandatory reconstruction.
