Decline in passenger traffic at Athens International Airport continued in December, following the trends of the previous months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on air travel, with restrictive traffic and transportation conditions still in force.

68.4% drop, compared to the 2019 levels

 

Specifically, the passenger traffic of the airport amounted to approximately 236 thousand passengers, reduced by 85.6% compared to the corresponding levels of 2019. Passengers, both from domestic and international flights, recorded a decrease of 80.1% and 87.7% respectively.

In total, during 2020, passenger traffic of the Athens International Airport amounted to 8.08 million, marking a decrease of 68.4% compared to the levels of 2019, due to the effects of the pandemic during the period of March-December.

International traffic decreased by 71.6%, while domestic passenger traffic decreased by 61.1%.

Historic highs for the airport's performance in 2019

It is recalled that during 2019, the Athens International Airport had recorded its best historical performance in terms of passenger traffic with 25.57 million passengers, exceeding by 1.4 million passengers (+ 6%) the traffic of 2018. This increase was a result of the significant increase in international traffic (+1.4 million or + 8.6%), as domestic passengers remained at 2018 levels (+ 0.3%).
