In EBRD we consider capital markets as a capital distribution engine for modern economies that generates economic growth while increasing transparency, Andreea Moraru EBRD Regional Head, Director Greece&Cyprus said. The use of capital markets is critical for mobilizing additional capital towards sustainable development.

We support companies, with bond and equity purchases, including Greece, where we are one of the largest institutional investors. The capital market expansion in economies where we invest is one of the bank's strategic priorities.

Historically, capital markets have never been a core financing channel for Greek companies - that have mainly relied on bank loans -. Only a small number of very large firms have publicly offered shares to investors. This situation was altered in 2016, when Greek authorities introduced a bond legislation in an attempt to revive the local capital market.
