Wind power capacity exceeded 5.5 GW in the first half of the year, according to data released by the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (ELETAEN).

As of the end of June 2025, the total installed wind power capacity in Greece reached 5,507 MW, following the connection of 37 new wind turbines to the grid during the first half of the year. These new installations added 152.2 MW of capacity and represent investments totaling €180 million.

According to the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWEA/ELETAEN), the annual growth rate of wind power capacity has doubled compared to the previous year. While this is a positive development, it is still insufficient to restore balance in the overall mix of renewable energy technologies.

By the end of June 2025, more than 1 GW of new wind parks were either under construction or under signed contracts. The vast majority of these projects are expected to be connected to the grid within the next 18 months. In addition, approximately 300 MW of capacity has been awarded through tenders, with performance guarantees already submitted, although these projects are not yet classified under the aforementioned categories. As a result, the total installed wind capacity is projected to reach 6.5 GW by the end of this period.

Regional Distribution

In terms of regional distribution:

  • Central Greece continues to lead with 2,427 MW (44%) of installed capacity.
  • It is followed by the Peloponnese with 709 MW (13%).
  • And Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, which hosts 535 MW (9.7%).

Leading Market Players

The top five corporate groups in the Greek wind energy sector are:

  • TERNA Energy – 1,034 MW (18.8%)
  • MORE – 774 MW (14.1%)
  • Iberdrola Rokas – 409 MW (7.4%)
  • Principia – 368 MW (6.7%)
  • PPC Renewables – 308 MW (5.6%)

Other notable players include TotalEnergies, EDF, METLEN, Jasper Energy, among others.

Delayed Projects and Missed Opportunities

ELETAEN also notes that, between 2018 and 2022, wind parks with a total capacity of 1,592 MW were awarded through the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) tenders. These are considered mature projects that should already be operational.

However, due to significant bureaucratic delays, only 746 MW (47%) had been commissioned by the end of the first half of 2025. These delays come at a cost: the remuneration prices for the awarded wind projects are significantly lower than the cost of electricity generation from natural gas or lignite.

Had the remaining 846 MW of projects been completed on time, they would now be supplying cheaper energy, providing permanent relief to Greek consumers and supporting the national economy.
