Turkey has increased the transit fee it charges commercial ships to use the Istanbul and Canakkale straits, in line with rights granted to it by the Montreux Convention, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said.

The minister announced that the net unit per ton used to set tolls on the straits has increased to $4.42. "Since July 1, the inflow of foreign exchange into the country through the straits has increased," he said, adding that the rules set by the Montreux Convention apply to strait tolls.

“From 1983 to October 7, 2022 $0.8063 per net ton was charged for international vessels passing through the straits. After 39 years, on October 7, 2022, by presidential order, we updated these fees and increased the net ton fee for vessels to $4.08. We are updating this fee to $4.42 as of July 1, 2023.”

The Montreux Convention was adopted in 1936. It preserves freedom of passage through the straits for merchant ships in both peacetime and wartime, but the regimes are different for each.

Citing an example for the latest price update, Uraloğlu said: “A ship with a net tonnage of 10,000, paid a total of $3,240 for lighthouse, rescue and health services before October 7, 2022. This cost increased to $16,393 on October 7, 2022. Under the new tariff to be voted on July 1, a ship of 10,000 net tonnage will have to pay $17,760. With this increase, a historic step is taken to strengthen the country's foreign exchange inflow."
