The newly constructed cycle lane on Panagouli Avenue effectively links the existing Ypsilantou cycle route with the under-construction cycle lane on Lappa Street. It also serves several key municipal sports facilities located near the stadium and athletic park, as well as the schools in the surrounding area. The Mayor was briefed on the project and requested that the contractor immediately begin work on completing the cycle lane along Lappa Street.
Project Details
The project design for Dimitriou Lappa Street includes a single-direction, exclusive bicycle lane, 1.50 meters wide, running parallel to motor traffic. The lane will be marked with a special red acrylic road marking paint, enhanced with micro glass beads to increase reflectivity.
The separation between the bicycle and vehicle lanes will be achieved using a non-mountable traffic separator made of rubber, 25 cm wide and 10 cm high. This separator will be installed along a continuous 30 cm wide white line made from high-durability acrylic marking paint. The rubber separator has a conical cross-section to minimize impact risks for both cyclists and motor vehicles in the event of contact. It is made of highly elastic, shatter-resistant material, specially treated to ensure long-term durability.
Alexandrou Panagouli Street is a two-way road. The new cycle path on this street is also two-directional and is located entirely on the eastern sidewalk, except for the final block section approaching Lappa Street. On the sidewalk segment, the cycle lane consists of three zones:
- a 0.70 m buffer separating cyclists from vehicle traffic,
- a 2.50 m bidirectional cycle path, and
- a pedestrian walkway at least 1.60 m wide.
In the final block, where the sidewalk narrows to just 1.30 m, cyclists will share the road with vehicles in a designated “cycle street.”
The width of the roadway and sidewalks along D. Lappa and A. Panagouli Streets varies. At every corner, curb ramps will be installed for accessibility. Where pedestrian crossings are present, the start of the sidewalk will be marked with tactile paving for the visually impaired. Appropriate signage and traffic signals will be installed along the entire route.
Crosswalks for both pedestrians and cyclists will be marked at intersecting streets. Driveway entrances along the route will also be marked as indicated in the project’s design plans, and solar-powered road studs will be installed at those locations.
High-durability road marking materials containing micro glass beads will be used throughout to enhance visibility and reflectivity.
The total length of the cycle route to be implemented on both Lappa and Panagouli Streets is 2,326.72 meters, with a total project cost of €465,000.
