Inflation in supermarket products "ran" at a rate of 0.28% in March 2024 compared to 2.70% in February 2024, according to the results of a targeted survey by the Consumer Goods Retail Research Institute (IELKA) exclusively in the channel of large chains of the industry.

Of the 23 product categories, 10 recorded a decrease and 13 recorded an increase. In particular, the biggest price reductions are recorded in the categories: stationery, diapers & napkins (-5.21%), fasting foods, alipasta (-4.37%), cold meats (-3.78%), cheese (-2.98%) , dairy (-2.96%).

It is noted that in dairy and cheese products, the reductions recorded are the result of both the normalization of the market after the pandemic and the reduction in producer prices for some products. Lenten, alipastas include many items which in March were on sale due to Clean Monday and March 25.

Biggest increases are recorded in the categories: water and soft drinks (+9.40%), nuts and snacks (+5.02%), ready meals (+4.62%), dry grocery food (+4.57%), cookies, chocolates, sweets (+4.31%). Most of these items are affected by the international prices of raw materials and especially the prices of sugar and cocoa.

The "grocery food" category is mainly affected by olive oil. The moderate increase is due to the reductions in the prices of other oils, but also of the other products that participate in this category (pasta, rice, etc.). It is noted that fresh fruits and vegetables, for which throughout 2023 increases in product prices are recorded as a result of increased production costs, extreme climate events and international prices of raw materials and led to upward pressures on food inflation, the rate is limited increase to 1.77%.
