Approval Granted for the Commencement of the Pier 6 Expansion Project at the Port of Thessaloniki.

According to the company, this is a strategic infrastructure investment valued at several hundred million euros, of critical importance to Thessaloniki and Northern Greece, as well as to the Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA S.A.). The project is expected to substantially strengthen the port’s infrastructure and elevate its technical and operational capabilities.

The scope of the project includes the construction of a new quay exceeding 500 meters in length, suitable for accommodating large-displacement vessels. It also entails seabed deepening, the development of new quay walls, enhanced land access, the creation of additional storage facilities, and supporting improvements to surrounding terrestrial infrastructure.

This flagship investment will enhance the port’s competitiveness and commercial throughput, significantly improving its international profile and enabling it to serve mainline container vessels with capacities of up to 24,000 TEU.

The construction phase—already underway—is anticipated to generate approximately 4,000 jobs, contributing both to local employment and regional economic activity.

The project is a central component of ThPA’s long-term strategic plan to position Thessaloniki as a major logistics and trade hub in the Balkans. Upon completion, the Port of Thessaloniki is expected to join the top tier of ports in Southeastern Europe.

The mandatory investment program also includes the restoration and adaptive reuse of the historic Old Customs Station, along with a series of projects aimed at the improvement, repair, upgrade, and reconstruction of existing port infrastructure.

These investments, combined with the ongoing integration of the port into the national rail and road networks (PATHE and Egnatia Odos), as well as additional voluntary capital expenditures, are designed to foster cross-border logistics synergies. Collectively, they will reinforce the port’s competitive positioning and make a meaningful contribution to the sustainable development of Thessaloniki and the wider region.
