A historic high was reached in 2023 for clean electricity production in Greece, with 57% of the energy mix coming from Renewable Energy Sources (air, solar) and hydroelectric units, exceeding 25 TWh.

In 2022, the coverage of total demand from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) generation was 50.12%. However, in 2023, according to data released by ADMIE, the annual production of green energy reached a decade record of 21.35 TWh, which is a 147% increase compared to the annual electricity production from RES in 2014 (8.64 TWh).

In fact, the largest monthly production from RES in the history of the electricity system (2.25 TWh) was recorded in August 2023.

It is noteworthy that RES production surpassed 1.5 TWh per month throughout the year for the first time. Over the last decade, the coverage of total demand from RES generation has increased by 151%, reaching over 43% in 2023, which is the highest recorded so far. At the same time, the participation of lignite in the domestic energy mix has further decreased, reaching a historic low of 10.1% last year.

This decrease is a result of the country's ligniteization program's progress, given that in 2014, energy production from lignite exceeded 54%. The trend towards environmentally friendly forms of energy continues to rise.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Thodoros Skylakakis, emphasized that the government's strategic choice is to promote further penetration of Renewable Energy Sources into the country's energy potential. The government believes that this will significantly contribute to the green transition, lower electricity prices and enhance the energy security of Greece.

The Minister added that the initiatives the government has taken are bearing fruit, as evident from the recent and extremely encouraging data released by ADMIE. The data shows that in the last decade, energy production from RES increased by 147%, and 2023 was a record year for the production of clean electricity in Greece.

Manos Manousakis, the President and CEO of ADMIE, stated that the operator has been contributing to the rapid development of green energy by granting timely connection conditions and connecting new RES stations at the fastest possible rate.

ADMIE's ten-year investment plan of €5 billion aims to continuously develop the electricity system, increasing the electricity space from 18 GW today to 29 GW in 2030, which will allow the introduction of even more RES units. At the same time, the international connections promoted by ADMIE will give Greece the opportunity to turn into a strong exporter of energy from Renewable Sources.
