The general census of buildings and population conducted by ELSTAT every decade is very important.

It helps us to form hundreds of indicators and make decisions at every level, from local government and the Greek State to the EU and all international organizations. From the big and difficult issues to the small and everyday issues.

The census actively promotes science, technology, innovation because all scientists are using these statistics.

It improves our lives, because only with these data available can our cities and our regions be designed with knowledge, to make our real estate more valuable, to increase the telecommunication and energy networks, to make interventions in the green of cities and in natural environment that will improve our future.

It contributes to ultimately increase the wealth of the country and its citizens, because new products and services are designed on them, investment decisions are made, new businesses are established and new jobs are created.

TEE is already been offering ELSTAT with the necessary data for new constructions in the country. But the State does not yet have electronically recorded all the data it needs for its - many - statistical analyzes.

With the advanced technology, with the new information systems of the State that are constantly improving, such as the Electronic Building Identity that will soon be generalized for all properties, building inventories will soon become more coherent and easier to carry out. But we are not yet a country at this point.

And it is necessary to measure now and to measure correctly, based on the principles of science.

I’d like to remind you that it has not been long time since when "greek statistics" had become a negative compliment… Let 's not experience such moments again….

For all these reasons, we must all participate in this year's census, which is being done in a new, remote way, due to the pandemic.

I call on every citizen to turn a deaf ear to the few but noisy deniers of science and progress, who have found by the census another area to manifest their anti-social behavior.

I call on every chamber and every scientific collective body and civil society to promote their participation in the census.

I call on every engineer and the entire technical world not only to participate but also to become ambassadors of the census, analyzing in a simple way and documentation to our fellow citizens the advantages of this statistic.

It is in the hands of all of us to make science the common property of all. And finally to make our lives better.
