The torches are named “Essential”, reflecting a minimalist design imbued with powerful symbolism. The unveiling featured renowned athletes, including Stefania Belmondo and Bebe Vio in Milan, and Martina Caironi and Carolina Kostner in Osaka, who embodied the values of the flame and athletic perseverance.
Designed by Eni in collaboration with Versalis, with development by Studio Carlo Ratti Associati and production by Cavagna Group, the torches come in two versions: one for the Olympic Games and one for the Paralympic Games. The distinction lies primarily in color: the Olympic torch features green and blue reflections, while the Paralympic torch radiates bronze hues.
The “Essential” torch is both a tribute to Italian aesthetics and a feat of technological innovation. Weighing approximately 1,060 grams without the fuel cartridge, it is made predominantly from recycled materials, including aluminum and brass alloys. Its reusable fuel system allows up to ten uses, significantly reducing the number of torches required for the relay.
Special attention has been given to the flame’s fuel: the burner operates on bio-LPG, derived exclusively from renewable resources and organic residues. The PVD exterior coating offers heat resistance and a striking, dynamic reflection, harmonizing the torch with its surroundings.
More than just an object, the torch symbolizes global unity, hope, and resilience. After the Games, it will be preserved as a legacy piece at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, leaving a lasting testament to sustainability, innovation, and progress.
