This is a joint venture between Ameresco, Inc., a leading provider of energy solutions, and the SUNEL Group, an internationally recognized manufacturer (EPC Contractor) of large-scale photovoltaic parks.
"The 466 MWp (megawatt peak) projects mark a milestone in Romania’s journey towards enhancing its energy security, supporting economic growth, and achieving its climate goals by replacing coal-based power generation and supporting the country’s commitment to fully phasing out coal by 2032," said company representatives. They added that as the project contractor, responsible for the design, equipment supply, and construction, Ameresco SUNEL Energy A.E. ensures compliance with the highest standards of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.
The projects include the installation of over 757,000 fixed-tilt solar panels, aiming for maximum performance and efficiency. Once fully operational, the parks are expected to reduce environmental impact by approximately 734,789 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually, contributing to Romania's and Europe's broader zero-emissions targets. Construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, bringing Romania closer to achieving its climate goals and strengthening its position as a regional leader in clean energy.
“These projects exemplify our commitment to promoting renewable energy solutions and underscore the importance of Europe’s development and stability. By leveraging our expertise and resources, we not only contribute to Romania’s clean energy goals but also enhance our strategic diversification across Europe,” said Pete Christakis, President of Ameresco Inc. / Eastern US Region and Managing Director of Ameresco Sunel Energy A.E.
Konstantinos Zygouras, Vice President of Ameresco SUNEL Energy A.E., expressed confidence that "Romania’s significant potential in the solar energy sector, combined with targeted investments in renewables, will position the country as a leader in Europe’s energy transition," adding, "We are proud to collaborate with OMV Petrom CEO on these ambitious projects, contributing to both economic development and a more sustainable future."
It is worth noting that SUNEL, a multinational group with Greek interests, maintains a strong presence in Greece. With projects totaling approximately 1 GW (gigawatt), it has made and continues to make significant energy investments in regions such as Larissa, Kozani, and Drama. Since 2012, SUNEL has experienced dynamic growth, with operational centers in Athens, London, Valencia, Milan, and Bucharest. The company has operated across four continents and completed more than 500 projects. Currently, it is constructing solar parks in Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, with a total capacity of over 2 GW.
