AKTOR Romania, a subsidiary of the AKTOR Group, is making strong progress on the construction of the Apața–Cața segment (Lot 2) of the new Brașov–Sighișoara railway line, a project with a total budget of €507 million. This segment forms part of the broader modernization of Romania’s railway network and is integrated into the strategically important Rhine–Danube Trans-European Transport Corridor.
Twin Tunnels Through Mountain Terrain
The project includes the construction of two twin tunnels through the Homorod and Ormeniș mountainous regions, with lengths of 6.9 km and 5.1 km, respectively. These tunnels are designed to support train speeds of up to 160 km/h, significantly enhancing the efficiency and capacity of Romania’s rail infrastructure.
According to a recent company announcement, AKTOR Romania’s technical teams are working intensively. At the southern front (Ormeniș), excavation and installation of precast concrete segments have reached an average daily progress of 18 meters—a pace that underscores the company’s commitment to accelerating the project timeline.
Strong Progress and Acceleration Plans
To date, over 3.2 kilometers of tunnel have been excavated in the southern section. In the northern section (Homorod)—where complex geotechnical conditions present additional challenges—more than 500 meters of tunnel have already been completed. A comprehensive acceleration plan is actively underway in this area.
Broad Economic Impact and Local Partnerships
The project also includes extensive work on the railway superstructure. AKTOR Romania is collaborating with more than 200 subcontractors and suppliers, who provide essential equipment, materials, and services. This broad network supports thousands of direct and indirect jobs, reinforcing the project’s significant economic impact.
Technical Innovation: Four Tunnel Boring Machines
A standout feature of this project is the simultaneous use of four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs)—a first in Romania’s history and among the few examples of such scale in Europe. The AKTOR Group has invested approximately €70 million in acquiring these TBMs, securing a strategic competitive advantage ahead of future tenders for major infrastructure projects in Romania’s mountainous regions.
EU-Funded Strategic Infrastructure
Co-financed by the European Union, this project is being implemented by a joint venture in which AKTOR Romania plays a leading role. It is widely regarded as one of the country’s most important rail infrastructure projects, critical to the modernization and long-term resilience of Romania’s transport network.
