€7.49M redevelopment project underway for Skala Oropos Waterfront

The project has a total budget of €7.49 million, excluding VAT, with funding provided entirely from the own resources of the Attica Region. The intervention focuses on the aesthetic and functional upgrading of the coastal zone and is expected to significantly transform the appearance and functionality of public space in Skala Oropos.

The contract was signed by George Kormas, CEO of “Nea Mitropolitiki Attikis S.A.”, and the representative of the contractor appointed to carry out the project. Also attending the signing were Oropos Mayor George Yasimakis, Deputy Regional Governor for Eastern Attica Dimitris Damaskos, and the organisation’s General Director, Effi Filiopoulou.

Redevelopment Covering 56,843 sq m

The project covers a total area of 56,843 sq m, equivalent to approximately 57 acres. Of this area, 54,097 sq m comprises existing landscaped areas that will be reconstructed, while a further 2,746 sq m will consist of new extensions towards the settlement’s waterfront.

The main objective is to create a modern, safe and accessible public space, through interventions combining the upgrading of the waterfront with improvements to transport and port infrastructure.

The project includes the construction of a waterfront pedestrian promenade and cycle path, as well as specially designed routes to ensure the safe and unobstructed movement of people with disabilities.

At the same time, the outdoor areas serving local businesses will be reconstructed and surface paving will be renewed. New green spaces will also be created and street furniture will be replaced. The new urban equipment will include seating, pergolas, lighting fixtures, waste bins and protective bollards.

Upgrades to the Fishing Shelter

Particular emphasis is also being placed on the area’s fishing shelter. The project provides for its functional integration and increased capacity through the extension of the existing waterfront quays.

The pedestrian promenade will also be extended east of the shelter, while coastal protection works will be carried out along the existing waterfront section, which is affected by erosion and significant wave action.

These interventions will link the upgrading of public space with efforts to enhance the resilience of the coastal zone, reducing the impacts of erosion and wave activity.

New Traffic Management and Parking Arrangements

Another key component of the redevelopment is the redesign of the coastal road. The project provides for a new traffic management scheme and the creation of designated parking areas, with the aim of improving road network functionality and ensuring safer movement for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

The measures are intended to address accessibility and traffic-management issues simultaneously, particularly in an area that experiences increased visitor numbers during the summer months.

Redevelopment with Wider Development Impact

The redevelopment of Skala Oropos constitutes a complex intervention, combining architectural, traffic, port and environmental works along the same waterfront zone. The creation of a unified waterfront, the upgrading of public spaces, improved accessibility, the enhancement of the fishing shelter and coastal protection works are expected to improve the area’s functionality for residents, businesses and visitors.

With the signing of the contract, the project has now entered the construction phase. The Attica Region is financing the intervention with €7.49 million in own funds, while the total area to be redeveloped covers approximately 57 acres.
