METLEN achieves successful first firing of polish power plant

METLEN has reached a major milestone in the delivery of one of Poland's largest energy infrastructure projects, successfully completing the first firing of the 560 MW Grudziądz combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.

METLEN said in a statement that “the successful first firing of the unit marks a major milestone, signalling the start of the final testing and commissioning phase ahead of full commercial operation.

This milestone was achieved safely and under controlled conditions, in the presence of ORLEN’s senior management, underscoring its significance for all stakeholders. It was followed by another key step toward project completion: the synchronization of the generator with Poland’s National Power System.

The Grudziądz combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant is one of the largest power generation facilities in Poland. It is designed to supply electricity to up to one million households while making a significant contribution to the country’s decarbonization efforts and energy security.

The highly flexible CCGT unit ensures that the new power plant can operate efficiently alongside renewable energy sources, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions without compromising the reliability of electricity supply to consumers.

At the peak of construction, the project employed nearly 1,000 people on site. To date, more than 33,000 cubic meters of concrete have been poured, alongside 4,200 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 6,500 tonnes of structural steel, 500 tonnes of piping, and nearly 900 kilometres of cabling. Delivering a facility of this scale requires precision, engineering expertise, and close collaboration among all parties involved.

For METLEN, this achievement reflects the company’s proven ability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure projects safely and responsibly. METLEN also expressed its appreciation to its consortium partner, Siemens Energy, and CCGT Grudziądz LLC for their collaboration in delivering a power plant that will play a vital role in supporting Poland’s electricity system.
