The Central Archaeological Council (KAS) ruled on Tuesday that more than 30 hectares of former Helliniko airport is of archaeological interest.

The former Helliniko airport is the site of a planned real estate investment. Meanwhile, the government has expressed its satisfaction over the decision.

According to government sources, a major step is being taken to proceed with the investment while respecting the law, protecting the cultural heritage and not endangering the approval of the KAS procedures.

Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Amanatidis expressed the government's satisfaction over the Central Archaeological Council's decision on Tuesday to declare over 30 hectares of former Helliniko airport of archaeological interest, speaking to SKAI TV on Wednesday.

"Now the way is clear for the transfer of the shares to the company", Amanatidis said, adding that "we are satisfied because the investment has been launched in the most secure way".

The former Helliniko airport is the site of a planned real estate investment. Amanatidis said the privatisation of the site involved a very complicated process that was resolved in the best way, respecting the environmental and archaaeological concerns as well as legal ones.
