Hammerson is set to become the UK’s largest listed property company after proposing a £3,4billion takeover deal for rival Intu.

The merger would give Hammerson control of almost all of the UK’s prime retail stock: it already owns centres including the Bullring in Birmingham and Bristol’s Cabot Circus, but would add the Trafford Centre, Merry Hill and the Metrocentre to its books.

According to the telegraph, the combined group will have a £21billion portfolio of retail and leisure properties in the UK, France, Spain and Ireland, as well as stakes in a number of outlets including the popular Bicester Village.
