Arriving for the European Union leaders' summit on Thursday, French President Francois Hollande said he will demand a "comprehensive" agreement on Turkey.

He also made it clear that France will not accept any agreement that did not respect the right to asylum and did not include a commitment to assist Greece.

"It is Greece that is on the EU's external borders and hosts a large number of trapped refugees and it is [Greece] that needs financial support," he said, noting that unless Greece is supported the situation cannot be managed.

European citizens must be shown that Europe has a "communal solution" for the refugee problem, the French president added.

Questioned about France's relations with Germany, Hollande referred to the trilateral meeting he had earlier with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, noting that only Germany and France united could give common solutions.
