The problem of the cruise sector in Greece is not institutional but results from deficiencies in infrastructure and lack of cooperation, according to a survey by non-profit think-tank diaNEOsis.

Greek tourism is generally performing well but the cruise sector is underperforming, the survey said, adding that Greece ranks 8th in terms of cruise revenues despite its being the fourth most popular destination in Europe.

The key for Greece to raise revenues from this market is to develop home porting, i.e. the ports where a cruise starts and ends.

Greece accounts for about 11% in cruise ship approaches in the Mediterranean, but only for 8% in the number of passengers and 6% in the number of home portings.
