The European Commission on Monday announced that an additional 6.48 million euros in emergency aid will be given to help improve conditions for the reception of refugees on the Greek islands of Lesvos (Kara Tepe) and Chios (Souda).

The Commission said that the extra funds will be given to the UNHCR to provide services such as food, water and drainage, as well as for the protection of vulnerable migrants, education and healthcare.

Based on the Commission's figures, a total of 361.82 million euros emergency financing has so far been been given to international aid organisations operating in Greece and an additional 509.5 million euros to Greek authorities to fund national programmes in 2014-2020.
