The building that collapsed in the old habour of Patras on Friday killing one man, had been classified as derelict and had signs telling people not to approach it, the president and CEO of Patras’ port authority (OLPA) Nikos Kontoes told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

"The building that collapsed in the northern port had been classified as derelict and had signs saying that the area is crumbling and shouldn’t be approached by citizens,” he said. Ironically, Kontoes continued, an agreement to demolish the building was signed earlier today with the company who bought it.

Although the building didn’t belong to OLPA, the authority was assigned the demolition order and to return the area to the city, he added.

Asked why the demolition had been delayed for so long, he said the archaeological service had blocked the decision because it wanted to preserve it.

“The archeological service had submitted a question to the Central Archaeological Board, which meant that this procedure took a significant time and delayed us,” Kontoes said.
